Portrait of Matthew C.

Innovation thrives in our state-of-the-art labs and workspaces, where dedicated teams come together to consistently push past expectations.

For Matthew and his team, this commitment to innovation doesn’t always involve developing a solution for a specific jobsite challenge. It can also mean anticipating our end-users’ needs by addressing performance roadblocks, improving workflows, and identifying new areas to expand our existing product offerings.

With this mindset, Matthew identified the opportunity that led to the development of our cable and pipe hanging systems. Taking a hands-on leadership role in this solution’s development, Matthew guided this innovation from vision to reality — one that simplifies workflows and lets the pros work with more agility.

This leadership earned Matthew an Eagle Award — an internal recognition for the people who drive innovation, exemplify a winning mindset, and make a worldwide impact through their work.

Read Matthew’s insights into this project, the importance of having a collaborative spirit, and how leadership empowers bold innovation.

Every time we’re given a real-life issue that the pros face, there’s a collective desire to solve it.

How does identifying challenges fuel the relentless approach to innovation we have at Stanley Black & Decker?

Matthew: Industry standards constantly evolve to improve performance and jobsite safety, creating opportunities for innovation. We focus on creating reliable solutions that achieve the highest level of performance, always treating our end-users as our number one priority.

How did your user-focused approach lead to the success of our cable and pipe hanging systems?

Matthew: Traditionally, we have focused on anchors within a building, but we identified an opportunity with our tools and anchors where we could complete the user workflow. This provides contractors and tradespeople with a complete, simplified solution.

What makes your teams collaborative approach to innovation so effective?

Matthew: Every time we’re given a real-life issue that the pros face, there’s a collective desire to solve it. Our team is home to some of the most talented and knowledgeable people in our industry. There’s a real sense of belonging, driven by a shared entrepreneurial spirit and a genuine desire to win.

As a leader, how do you empower people to innovate?

Matthew: Creating a winning spirit within my group starts with empowering people to innovate. As we’re prototyping and testing products in our lab, everyone’s encouraged to share their input and ideas. That collaborative environment produces solutions that not only solve challenges but also meaningfully impact our business.
