Zikhona "Zoe" Hlazo
Johannesburg, South Africa
As a little girl, Zoe was taught about the men and women in South Africa who changed the world, and opened opportunities for everyone. Zoe is now also a trailblazer – in 2018 she was named site manager of our Eskom Kendal Power Station project in South Africa, the first woman to hold that job. She oversees a team of 145 people.
"As a black woman, I realize I’ve made great strides in the inspection industry – it’s a male-dominated industry – and my attention has always been to find my mark and find my space," she said. "I never knew that my purpose would lead me to such an incredible team, full of people who are passionate about their work. Little did they know they would be part of this milestone!"
Zoe said her energetic team makes it easy to love coming to work each day. "The people I work with are driven individuals and so energetic that you can’t help but join in," she said.
Ultimately, Zoe says she wants to continue to break boundaries and open up opportunities for other women in her field.
"I want to make a difference in some small way. I want to break boundaries," she said. "And what I love is that it has always been about me being me, without having to mimic my male counterparts. I thank Stanley for that. I started from scratch – a trainee, then a junior technician, senior technician and so on. Stanley Black & Decker has given me opportunities, and moving from position to position has reaffirmed my belief in myself. And I’m not done!"
