I joined Stanley Black & Decker in November 2013 after graduating from the University of Rochester (Rochester, NY) with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. I joined the Stanley Leadership Program as an Operations SLP and have rotated through three operations roles over the last two years.

My first rotation was in Shelbyville, KY where I worked as a Manufacturing Engineer. At this plant, I led a variety of productivity and cost savings projects throughout Linear Edge Manufacturing. I also worked alongside the engineering team to begin in-house Hole Saw Cap manufacturing. This was a great first rotation experience, as it helped me build a foundation of Lean through participation in multiple Kaizen Events and Lean Trainings.

My second rotation was in Charlotte, NC where I served as a pilot for a new Sub Value Stream Leader role within the Operations program. In this role, I was responsible for managing three MIUSA Cordless DeWALT assembly lines. In addition to the real-time leadership development, the responsibilities allowed me to touch Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, Finance, and HR on a daily basis. In addition, I was responsible for developing and driving the Kaizen Program for Charlotte Manufacturing. While in this role, I completed my SLP Lean Project – driving TPM into our End-of-Line Test Equipment. This project helped to significantly increase the productivity of one piece of Test Equipment and its Operator by 38%, while establishing best practices for standardizing machines and reducing variation. The project team was able to save over $118,000.

I am currently in my third rotation, which is also based in Charlotte, NC. In this role, I am working as a Productivity Lead for Charlotte, Jackson, and Hampstead Manufacturing. I am responsible for driving standardized Kaizen practices across all facilities, while also driving Lean projects and culture. This allows me to gain exposure to processes in three facilities, while also having the flexibility to assist in multiple capacities at any point in time.

In July 2015, I got the opportunity to step outside of Global Tools and travel to Taiwan for two weeks as part of the Project Agile Team. We were tasked with developing a strategic plan for a manufacturing facility in Chiayi, Taiwan that is part of our Security Business (SSS). It was an excellent development opportunity as we were exposed situations we would not normally encounter early in career as well as the chance to work with company leaders across many functions.

If I could stress anything to new SLPs, it would be the importance of building strong relationships in the program. We get an amazing opportunity to work in multiple places early in career as SLPs. Take advantage of the time and get to know the people you work with, both at the operator and senior management levels. You will find that getting to know the person and not just the professional will make for a stronger working relationship in addition to an invaluable network for the future.
