Stanley Black & Decker recently held our first-ever Global Diversity & Inclusion conference, joining together established affinity networks from around the Company.
Affinity networks – voluntary, employee-driven groups – have been established throughout our business and regions to provide an environment where employees can engage around a particular shared interest or experience. The objective of the groups is to engage, enable, and empower by providing networking opportunities, improve representation across the business and promote career advancement.
Best-practice sharing resulted in deeper understanding of our affinity networks.
Our Women’s Network aims to grow and develop women to achieve leadership positions. The Veteran’s Network provides resources to support professional development. The African Ancestry Network gives opportunities for community involvement and personal achievement. And our most-recent affinity group – Pride & Allies – provides our LGBTQ population with network support.
“We respect and embrace the differences of our employees, because we know that different ideas, perspectives, and backgrounds results in a stronger work environment,” said Joe Voelker, Chief Human Resources Officer.

This year, the affinity groups came together for a three-day session focused on advancing diversity and inclusion within the company. By sharing best practices, representatives from each network were able to brainstorm development ideas for their own groups, while collaborating as a whole for the company’s future.
Round-table discussions enabled attendees to brainstorm ideas for future success.
“When the affinity groups started, they all had their own mission around connecting, community, and career,” said Sally Bartas, Training & Development Manager. “Since then, we’ve seen a lot of great things come out of these groups individually, but just recently we’ve seen them connect and come together to drive career development.”
After hearing guest speakers, participating in round-table sessions, and witnessing a panel discussion, each employee walked away from this conference with a greater sense of purpose.
“I was so happy to be part of this conference because it gives us an opportunity to connect,” said Maria Perdomo, Commercial Finance Manager. “It’s a way to give employees the tools they need to succeed and receive career opportunities.”
