We work, design, manufacture, market, sell and transport our products with sustainability in mind. We are committed to our ECOSMART™ plan and embedding environmental awareness into everything we do, across our entire value chain.
“We see sustainability as a competitive differentiator that reinforces our position as a responsible business leader, improves our performance and fortifies our brands.”
Deb Geyer, Vice President, EHS and Corporate Social Responsibility
We measure our performance and are committed to transparent reporting. Every year, we publish a scorecard that clearly demonstrates how we continue to improve the sustainability of our operations, our products and our communities while helping our suppliers and our customers to do the same.
An Investment in Renewable Energy
In 1925, The Stanley Works built the Farmington River Power Plant that’s still in operation today. Originally, the power was routed to the factory in New Britain to provide renewable energy for a portion of the operations. In the 1990s, the practice of directly feeding the plant was discontinued and now the power is routed back to the grid for energy credits. The plant averages 32 million kilo-watt hours of electricity generation a year which is enough to power approximately 2000 homes. The Power Plant is a great example of ECOSMART™ and a model of sustainability for our company.
“We can all learn from the Farmington River Power Plant as an example of ECOSMART™ and investigate projects to source renewable energy either from our sites or from the local utility companies.”
Deb Geyer – Vice President, Environmental Health & Safety and Corporate Social Responsibility
Our Path to Become Carbon Positive
After a yearlong review, we have established bold new ECOSMART™ targets as a part of our business strategy, including a pledge to become operationally carbon positive by the year 2030.
To start, we’ve set targets to reduce our environmental impacts by 20% by 2020*. These targets include:
Reducing operational energy consumption by 20%
Reducing operational water consumption by 20%
Reducing operational waste generation by 20%
Of the total waste generated by 2020, 80% will have a reuse or recycling disposition
Reducing carbon emissions by 20%
*Over our 2015 baseline.
Our ongoing environmental sustainability efforts have gained recognition from key monitors of corporate performance. For the seventh consecutive year, we were named to the Dow Jones Sustainability Index for North America. This list is recognized as a benchmark for investors in several categories including Climate Strategy, Corporate Citizenship and Philanthropy, Human Capital Development, and more. In addition, CDP, an international nonprofit organization that supports sustainable economies, identified Stanley Black & Decker as a global leader in climate disclosure practices for the fifth consecutive year.
